Privacy policy
Effective July 7, 2026
Playing needs no account. Your voice is processed by your browser’s speech service — we never receive or store your audio. Games and transcripts stay in your browser; if you sign in, we also keep a copy so they sync across your devices. If you sign in and use 👍/👎, we store that exchange with your account to improve coaching. We don’t sell your data, and you can delete your account anytime.
Chess Coach is operated by [Five Over Nine LLC — CONFIRM ENTITY] (“we,” “us”). This policy explains what we collect, why, and what control you have. Questions: alex@fiveovernine.com.
Voice input
When you talk to the coach, your speech is transcribed by your browser’s built-in speech-recognition service. In Chrome, that typically means your browser sends the audio to Google to turn it into text. This happens between your browser and that service — we never receive or store your audio. We only ever see the resulting text, and only when you send it to the coach. You can use text chat instead of voice at any time.
The coach’s voice
The coach’s spoken replies are synthesized either locally in your browser or on our server. We do not use a third-party text-to-speech provider, and we do not store synthesized audio.
Your games and chat
Your game state and chat transcripts are stored locally in your browser (localStorage and IndexedDB) — your browser is always the source of truth. If you’re signed in, we also store a copy of your games and their transcripts on our server, tied to your account, so they sync across your devices. That copy is deleted when you delete your account. If you’re not signed in, we don’t have a copy at all — clearing your browser’s site data removes those games for good.
Feedback you send
If you’re signed in and you rate a coach reply with 👍 or 👎, we store that exchange — the position, your question, and the coach’s reply — together with your account id, so we can improve coaching quality. If you’re not signed in, the same feedback is stored without any account link.
Accounts
An account is optional. If you sign in with Google, we store your email and your name/avatar as provided by Google. We keep a session cookie to remember you’re signed in. We do not use advertising trackers.
Payments
Paid plans are handled by Stripe. When paid plans launch, Stripe processes your card — we never see or store card numbers. We store a Stripe customer reference and your plan status so we know what you have access to.
Deleting your data
You can delete your account at any time from Account → Data & privacy. Deleting your account removes your user record and cascades to your synced games and the feedback rows tied to it. You can also email us to request deletion.
What we don’t do
We don’t sell your data. Chess Coach is not directed at children under 13 today, and we don’t knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
We’ll update this page as the product changes and note the effective date at the top. Material changes will be announced before they take effect.
